The final assembly of our bench and table, a sight we are all glad to see! We had a very productive morning applying the final touches to our project. Final details like plugging bolt holes with walnut and wedging the cross members into the table were all small things but definitely added to the finished product! Today we spent some time in the workshop learning how to make beautiful wooden fridge magnets using the scroll saw. We were all very impressed! The groups waist height rustic table is nearly there just finalising the joints. Sterling work lads! It's going to be good. With Marcin and Mark Lafferty. Today we were brought on a Field trip to a construction site where 3rd year students of Hyria, Finland built houses as part of their college assignments. The houses are of the highest quality and all vocational students played their part in building the houses from the ground up. Block layers, electricians, plumbers and the different trades contribute to the houses to ensure a turnkey finish is achieved. When the houses are finished they are sold and the money goes back into the college to help fund education. An outstanding and beautiful rustic ladder shelf designed, assembled and constructed by Melissa McMahon, PJ and Sean Day 4 a model of the joint were using on the furniture, and work begins by cutting mortises by hand as the machine is not going to be accurate enough. As a treat, we were brought ice fishing by our lovely tutor Jamro in a beautiful setting. What an experience! With the design work out of the way... Manufacturing work commences!! Very busy in the workshop - drafting cutting lists, sanding and working out how it's all going to fit together. Everybody hard at work! On day 2 the group discussed further on everybody’s designs and finalised the details on the sketches. A cutting list was drawn up and people were delegated different jobs. I finished some sketches of the benches I designed, I sanded some wavy edged timber for the table and I used the plainer to thickness the wood for all the furniture. Pre-design and production meetings & Design work on paper... A blank canvas for our project and taking the wood from the kiln.. On day one we were given a tour of the faculty and its equipment. The group met with its students and tutors and were given the brief to design furniture for a new classroom. In the early afternoon we went to site to look at the new classroom and to take measurements. On returning to the wood workshop we gathered as a group and came up with ideas for the room, we sketched and worked out how much wood we needed for the job. |
